MRS. BROWN.PASADENA,CALIFORNIA I began this series of self portraits in the home of Mrs. Brown, a ninety year old woman in Pasadena whom I lived with for four months. The work is based on stories told by Mrs. Brown, intuitions I had while living there and snapshots of her life in this home. I was living in a home that seemed to be from the past and I was reminded of my parents when they first moved to California. There were similarities in these experiences and surroundings. Both of their stories became the starting point to a narrative which then became a story about one woman with many faces. I attempt to speak about a woman's voice both liberated and controlled. If the walls surrounding her could speak, what would they say? How is a feminine being created? It is about seeing and to be seen. It is about beauty, the mask, social conduct and traditions. These photographs are memories which create a nostalgic longing yet with the awareness that we are not in the 1950s, 60s or 70s,but in 2005. There is he past whereby one learns to push away or continually be inspired by it. How have traditional notions of feminity been re-defined really? In order to explore this question I delve into those around me and with raw instinctual inspriation, my own being in self portraiture and my great interest in photography. |
