Get Ready AminakaWilmont's New Look

May 11, 2007

First of all, just in case you were asking yourself, we do not have images or sketches of the new collection to show to you. It is still work in progress, so the photos you see in this article are from the Autumn/Winter '07 - '08 and Spring/Summer '07 collection, in order for you to see how their last collections looked like. This said, we can begin! Probably not all of you remember that after winning ITS#FOUR Collection of the Year Marcus decided to join strengths with Maki (his fiancèe and a fashion designer as well) and give birth to a creative duo called AminakaWilmont. The first collection developed by these two very talented minds was presented the year after at ITS#FIVE and marked the beginning of a new, high-end fashion perspective which we hope will last for a very long time.

The collection that followed maintained the duo's spirit, attitude, taste and sense of fashion: Luxurious details and cuts for a very wearable collection, loosing none of the aristocracy, the sensuality, the strength and uniqueness that are the trademarks of their work, maintaining an extraordinary ability in cutting and tailoring.

In a market like fashion where everything seems to be already said and done and little space is left for new brands, AminakaWilmont drew great attention to and distinguished themselves.
How did they do it?
The recipe is simple but the ingredients are extremely rare: Take two amazingly creative and talented minds with top-class technical abilities. Add a producer who gives them financial backing (be careful not to use a loan shark, which is what most frequently happens...) to start their brand and distribute their work in the right shops. Have them work 24/7 with passion and dedication and prepare them to make great sacrifices to survive and eventually succeed. Sprinkle with attention from the press and a bit of luck et voilà, your dish is ready. Marcus and Maki are following this recipe with no hurry. They are workaholics on a mission and their hard work is paying off: AminakaWilmont is sold right in the shops where the two designers always wanted their clothes to be and the press continues to pay great attention to their work.

We had a chance to talk with Marcus on the phone about what they are up to. At present they are developing a new menswear collection that will be revealed in June at Rendez Vous Paris, the renowned fashion fair. Soon after (September) they will present their new womenswear collection in London and complete a project that started out from the same concept.

Inspiration first came from the steam age and steam engines: Hundreds of cog wheels in the mechanisms, the steam coming out...all of this is being translated into the garments through the use of prints and embroideries and has also strongly influenced the colour palette of the collection.
Then, Marcus and Maki realised that with this new project they wanted to explore shape and volumes since they had always worked on slim silhouettes in the past. What they want to present now is a twist in the plot, a new philosophy on shape which has become the real main concern of this collection. Therefore there will be more volume and draping on the outside, while the slimness of the past collections will be maintained on the inside of the outfits. The high-end feel of the garments, a trait which has always distinguished them in the past, will obviously remain thanks to the use of luxurious wools, transparent fabrics, very thin leather and the unique cuts and tailoring.

AminakaWilmont put great emphasis on inventiveness, it explores and tries to re-design the borders of what is allowed and what is not, especially in menswear. We are obviously very eager to see their latest effort (we already tried to convince Marcus to send us sketches or even very rough drawings...), and even though we will be going mad in that period since it is so close to ITS#SIX, we will surely keep our eyes out for the opening of Rendez Vous to see yet another expression of their talent. 29 June is already marked off on our agenda.
