Jing for PITTI

February 19, 2008

While the battle that will decide the candidates for the American Presidency continues, few know that the cover of American Newsweek's Christmas issue - portraying democrat candidate John Edwards a few days before his decision to quit the White House race and leave the field to "heavyweights" Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama - was shot by our ITS#SIX Photography winner Jing Quek.

This is just the latest step of a journey that started out last summer at ITS and that is gradually turning Jing Quek in a renowned photographer, receiving attention and displaying his photos in important exhibitions, and working on photo shoots for important magazines. Strangely enough, the black and white photograph John Edwards has almost nothing to do with Jing's usual and very original way of shooting pictures...

Jing's photography talent appears to express itself best when he's shooting groups of people using strong, in-your-face colours: Ping-pong players, military troops, a group of lawnmowers, tourists...Jing meticulously prepares his sets.

Nothing is left to chance, resulting in very powerful images that leave space for several interpretations: the fear every person has of getting lost in the crowd, the need to feel accepted by at least one group...Simply put, they are fresh, original, and tremendously fun to look at.

Together with the cash prize of the MINIInternational Photo Award, Jing also "grabbed" the PITTI Immagine Photo Award. Given to two selected ITS#SIX photo finalists (the other winner was Maria Giulia Giorgiani), it consisted in shooting the advertising campaigns of the PITTI Immagine Womenswear fairs in Milan - Touch, Neozone and Cloudnine - held twice a year, in September and February.

The images are then used in all forms of advertising and in the fairs' catalogue (with an inside detachable insert completely dedicated to the photographer), to be viewed by all insiders and journalists in the field as well as readers of fashion publications. A considerable amount of people, that's for sure!

After Maria Giulia's photo shoot for the September fairs, it is now Jing's turn to show his interpretation for the February edition! And what he has come up with is an explosion of colour that perfectly matches his unique style.
Looking at it, we are again brought to think about several possible interpretations, the strongest of which might be the following: Fashion is a wonderful combination of colours and shapes that - just as flowers need water - needs the power of a creative mind to always re-invent itself and blossom. If fashion isn't taken care of, just like a flower with no water it is condemned to death.

...In the end, it is original, fresh, colourful and tremendously fun to look at.
