Thank you to all 1054 ITS#SEVEN Applicants!
The ITS#SEVEN preselections have just taken place.
A huge thank you to everyone who applied to ITS, all 1054 of you. We are conscious of the time and money it takes to prepare a portfolio, often at a moment when you are absorbed in your final projects. And after all your painstakingly hard work to not be selected as a finalist is to say the least a disappointment. We hope that you do not feel that your efforts have gone to waste. We keep all portfolios. They are taken care in our archives.
|
In March we finally managed to give a home to this heritage of creativity that is testimony to the all applicants, the ITS#ARCHIVE. We have also started collecting the next step of the creative process. We have the actual outfits, pieces that are not there merely to cover and decorate, but are there to make statements, exist to materialise and give a cause to creativity and talent. So we have both the roots, the motivations, the reasons and the finalised objects. |

Every year, new finalists are invited to Trieste, each one donates a sample of his/her creativity. As a result of the past editions of ITS#PHOTO, we can showcase a special photo gallery, many photo projects that arrived from all over the world to represent a specific area of photography, images that are characterised by a subtle fashion mood.
All this put together in a unique Creative Archive.

At the moment these treasures are exposed in our office attic, a large space where time seems to stand still. The set up is made with refurbished antique objects lying around in an apparently chaotic way. It is a proper "attic of memories", halfway between Alice in Wonderland and a Victorian museum storage room. But we want to make the archive travel! It is not destined to stay in the attic. In the very near future we hope it will leave Trieste making it way to museums and exhibitions.
It is a very precious thing indeed. And it is all worth it, since we will do everything to protect work from oblivion, showcasing it at a high level and to the right people, giving it that artistic dignity and visibility it deserves.
We encourage anyone who wants to be part of our archive and contribute with more material to contact us.
The ITS#ARCHIVE is just one initiative, we are dedicated to finding new ways in involving and keeping in touch with applicants who are not selected as finalists. This is the philosophy that drove us to create our first editorial project- The Seismographer. After the preselections every year we felt frustrated having seen so many breathtaking projects and not being able to support such talents. Finally we have found the means and financial backing to go ahead. The Seismographer, it is intends to register - not judge - the material received, trying to give also socio-cultural explanations of why certain tendencies and concepts come out around the world. We want to analyse 4 main points: concepts, colours, fabrics and shapes. So do not be surprised if you hear from us in the next couple of months.
We are also looking for ways of supporting new work experiences and careers through special projects, stages and job placements. If you may have noticed that we have a job offers section but you do not need to apply to this as having applied to ITS will automatically mean you are considered for suitable offers. If having your material shown external is of concern ? do not worry we of course, always ask your permission before putting you forward.
And this is what the Jury had to say:
ITS#FASHION - Jury Quotes
Francesco Brusaporco- DIESEL
Apart a few exceptions on which we debated, it was quite easy to choose the finalists. I have found a lot of pessimism in the students' projects and little space for happiness. Covered faces and colours like black and grey, very little "fairy tale" collections and less references to childhood and dreams than in the past. Is it due to the present day society we live in? Our world is definitely in the middle of a critical period. I am referring to global warming, religious tensions, distrust in politics, economical recession...This clearly influences the work of young talents The jurors were all wonderful and thanks to their professionalism and experience I believe we have made an excellent selection.
Bernardette Wittman - Founder and Head of BWG
In the past few seasons I have noticed that it is very hard to find strong, young, interesting collections. Going through the portfolios one can feel that young designers are touched by the international concerns of society. It is hard for them to feel enthusiasm and express all of their creativity. In any case I am very happy with the result of the preselections because it was possible to choose design projects from different countries that clearly expressed the influence of their home culture.
There are some interesting, fresh, young, colourful and elegant collections that show very clearly where fashion is headed according to the young designers. We have quite a homogenous selection for ITS#SEVEN.
Elisa Palomino - Diane Von Furstenberg Head of Studio
Much more than embellishments, embroideries and prints, we are invited to look inside the fabrics: woven sculptures, felted organza, new subtle materials dress the body as an intricate puzzle of shapes and means.
Porfolios contain less research process but lead us into worked-out, stylised worlds often bound to ready-made magazines which focus decidedly on the personality and character of potential customers.
Robin Schulie - Buyer Maria Luisa Boutiques
Once again, the wide range of portfolios carefully selected by the ITS team shows us how much fashion students around the world work hard and are willing to display their efforts. This time though their mood is quite dark, less playful and less childhood-oriented than in the past. Maybe it's because now the students look at the future as adults, even if it appears pretty bleak? UK and Belgium still confirm their strength in building up fashion?s future, but many other individuals and new centres are coming up with talented people. ITS definitely deserves its international appeal.
Deanna Ferretti - Entrepreneur
We live an international moment that is full of anxiety, uneasiness and uncertainty. This affects the young generations and that is why it was hard for us to find projects that really stand out. The portfolios lack in handiwork, they were often made with the help of a computer and there are less and less hand-made presentations. The jury group is made of people with great ability and experience and it was a pleasure for me to work with them. A very special thanks goes to the ITS team for their dedication to the young talents and to the schools of the world.
Valentina Maggi - Director of the Design Practice at Floriane de St. Pierre
It is always very difficult for me to speak about general trends. Most of all it's because I do not like to do so. I prefer to think and talk about the strength of individuals, about creativity and about single talents...These are all things that ITS is always full of!!
A very special thanks goes to all of the EVErs and to Carlotta, Diego and Loredana!
ITS#FASHION - Quotes of journalists attending:
Jerome Hanover - Journalist
It seems that students are the new children of Rei Kawakubo and John Galliano (with Hussein Chalayan as father-in-law), which is quite a strong mix.
Also I am very surprised to see the futuristic trends coming back. Everyone speaks about modernity. The 80's style seen on catwalks in the last 3 or 4 seasons arrived in the students' work this year, but it still needs a better reinterpretation, it is too literal.
I am glad to see that the sport couture concept is almost definitely out of business though there are still 2 or 3 students who focus on it . Let's put them in jail.
Menswear is improving more and more. There is good creativity, good balance and good moods in the portfolios but what I preferred was the EVE team.
There are many reasons to apply to ITS. We have kept you in suspense for long enough. Here are the ITS#SEVEN finalists for fashion, accessories and photography.
Angelo Flaccavento - Journalist
I believe that the appropriate keyword to read our present is anxiety: the time of certainty is definitely over, and the portfolios I have seen during the ITS preselections confirmed it. The answer to this "staus quo" is dual: black colour and strongly dark fantasies on one side, flaming theatre and explosions of colour on the other. These are two ways of reacting to the lack of certainty and to the meanness of the world today. In my opinion ours is also an age of great fragmentation: just like in My Space, every designer has its own little world and little network. It is also - above all - an aesthetic world that scarcely communicates outwards.
The portfolios that struck me most were those revealing an impressive strictness of planning, no matter if the final outcome is "crazy", pure or minimal. I am happy that two of these portfolios made it to the finals. The selection satisfies me. Maybe it lacks some levity, but I have to say there was not much of it in the excluded projects.
ITS#ACCESSORIES - Jury Quotes
Robin Schulie - Buyer Maria Luisa Boutiques
Accessories is such a difficult realm to define, going from shoes to bags, jewellery, softwear, bodypieces and much more. Most of all, it requires quite specific technical training. My impression is that the majority of the accessories designers enrolled never intended to design bags or jewellery, it just happened because they came up with the right ideas at the right time while in the studio. Nevertheless, the ITS selection is getting wider and better. What we probably need to do is to go and look for new faces in accessories fairs and international accessories salons, and also look for people who have already made themselves a name even though they are just starting.
Bernardette Wittman - BWG
Personally it was hard to find the right final selection at this edition. I think there are many innovative accessories collections worldwide but I was missing them in the ITS competition. Even though the accessories projects were not very new and exciting, we managed to choose an interesting mix of jewellery, shoes, bags and millinery collections.
Kei Kagami - Fashion Designer
The projects were of a good level, higher than last year. The worst ones were nevertheless a lot better in quality than last year's. By the way, I believe everything is more commercial than in the past. For the future I hope more and more students will apply, bringing more interesting and original creativity.
ITS#ACCESSORIES - Quotes of journalists attending:
Jerome Hanover - Journalist
A very good level. Very good creativity and on the other hand very good feasibility. The constraints of doing accessories might be very good boundaries to express creativity, especially regarding shoes.
