YKK 2009 Sample Book

Are you a young talented accessories designer interested in enrolling in ITS#ACCESSORIES? Then you cannot afford to miss this article. It will explain everything you need to know about the online YKK sample book, the tool you will use to decide which fastenings to include in your YKK accessories proposals.
All accessories contestants are asked to present three proposals for an accessory focused on a creative use of YKK fastenings. We are not asking you to produce anything at this stage, we are asking you to present three sketches, not the actual prototypes. It's actually six sketches in total because we want an artistic sketch and a technical sketch for each of the three proposals.
But which YKK fastenings can you use? Just like last year, YKK prepared an incredible online Sample Book for you to discover the range of products you can use, with several videos describing all types of fastenings, and interviews with past finalists of ITS as well as designers talking about their personal experience with YKK products.
Let's go through the online sample book together. Everything's quite clear inside but an explanation always helps. When you click on the above link, the first page you'll open has three videos explaining what YKK is looking for, how to enter ITS#ACCESSORIES (this sums it up but you have the entry requirements PDF for this) and what you need to prepare for the YKK project.
After that, you have a very important video called BASIC PRODUCT INFORMATION which we highly reccomend you look at in detail. Inside this section you will find links to learn more about fastenings and the instructions to view detailed catalogues of the YKK range of products.
After that you'll find a brief introduction to the range of YKK zippers and range of snaps and buttons. Then the funniest part of the whole sample book starts...
The other videos are a very funny but clear way of explaining the use of some of the most interesting fastenings produced by YKK. Follow the Einstein-like scientist and his crazy helper as they test zippers and other types of fastenings!
What is also very interesting for you to see are the video interviews of the past winners of the YKK Award. Have a look. They'll tell you how they developed their winning YKK Accessory and also about how they were supported by YKK after ITS. Anna Sheldon, who won a special YKK prize at ITS#SIX, worked for YKK developing the funny videos we told you about before. Tomasz Donocik, who won a special YKK prize at ITS#SEVEN, worked with YKK in their research & development department on new sliders.
So don't wait any longer and go and have a deep look at the online sample book. The sooner you do, the more ideas you'll get to develop your YKK accessory proposals and use fastenings in a creative way!
