WHAT DO THEY LIKE

June 03, 2009

Besides a large amount of creativity in the form of precious sketches, stories, drawings, pictures and inspirations (in a word dreams), receiving over one thousand projects every year also gives the EVE team a privileged point of view not only on fashion-accessories and photo trends, but also a lot of interesting info about what young people all over the world like and dislike. The enrolment process for ITS#EIGHT included many questions inquiring about preferred designers, magazines, jurors they would like, places they would like to work...

John Galliano

Obviously one of the first interesting facts comes from the simple question: Who is your FAVOURITE DESIGNER? John Galliano (“bronze medal” winner last year) is on top! A big jump for the intriguing Maison Martin Margiela (who went from 9th to 2nd position), while the top two designers from last year lost a little in the ranking...Alexander McQueen slipped from second to third place and Balenciaga, number one in the ITS#SEVEN statistics, remained in the top spots but at number four...

Moving on to the favourite jurors, no surprises in the top two positions, they were the same as last year. John Galliano and Alexander McQueen are still the leading two, furthering their fame and ascendancy on students and designers worldwide… In the top ten spots some movement dominated the questionnaires: Karl Lagerfeld, Maison Martin Margiela, and DIESEL climbed the polls conquering higher positions compared to last year. Upon analysis of the data, other designers moved up the charts. Alber Elbaz, Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf, Rick Owens...all of them were mentioned in ITS#SEVEN statistics but had a great boost in this year’s preferences.

In this “category” it is common and interesting to find other personalities beside designers... Scrolling down the names we found journalists (Suzy Menkes, Anna Piaggi, Carine Rotifeld, Franca Sozzani), artists (Madonna, Bjork, director Michel Gondry) and celebrities from the fashion world (Diane Pernet, EVE deus ex machina Barbara Franchin, Linda Loppa, Katie Grand) and still in the charts a strong pair keeps going... “My Mum” and “My Dad” who might not be key fashion figures but seem to find their way into the top spots anyway...

Bjork

DIESEL is on top of the favourite possible internships (hey, you enrolled in the right contest. The Diesel Award, besides the cash prize, offers the winner an internship within the Diesel Creative Team at its HQ in Italy!) followed by John Galliano and Maison Martin Margiela.

And what do young people like to read?
Vogue is in first place (considering the many different national editions), right after i-D that keeps pace, and the Collezioni family (HC, Prêt-à-Porter, Accessories and all the others) is in third place. The podium is exactly the same as it was for ITS#SEVEN. After a list of other fashion/lifestyle magazines (starting with Dazed & Confused, Another magazine, various editions of Elle, Purple and so on…), different themed journals are also mentioned lower in the polls, lead by National Geographic that, with its visual pleasure and nature related issues sits in 21st place, and in 6th for photo applicants. Amongst the Photography contestants’ answers, other high ranked magazines are Camera Austria, Zoom, Commercial Photo, Foam..

Staying focused on the ITS#PHOTO questionnaires, the favourite photographer made an incredible step forward, who ranked lower than 30th position last year (drum roll please….) Tim Walker is on top, right before the visionary David Lachapelle, Richard Avedon and Anne Leibovitz (15th last year)…seems like this poll is significantly characterized by changes in preferences, far more than the fashion/accessories one.

Tim Walker

Last but not least, in the preferred photo jurors chart, Martin Parr (seventh last year) is the preferred choice, followed by Gregory Crewdson (another name which was behind last year), and again Leibovitz and Lachapelle. This list also includes names from different fields, from David Lynch who closes the top ten to the legendary painter Frida Kahlo...

Frida Kahlo

So after this overview it seems to be clear how interesting it is to go through the inspiring names and rooted tastes of so many young people all over the world...the best possible wish of all the contestants (and all the ones who tried their best but did not make it) is to be listed one day in this type of chart mentioned by tomorrow’s talents, as preferred juror or designer or photographer… many of them wishing to be in the polls also...in the sweet “My Mum” or “My Dad” category.
